WHAT ARE CONNECTION CARDS?
The 52-Week Authentic Practitioner Reset is a deck of 52 cards, which act as the companion deck to real world critical self-reflective practices or supervision. Each card offers a deeper, thought-provoking introspective question and is partnered with an action challenge prompt to help health and helping professionals to have focussed support to move them through from burnout and overwhelm to pulling back into better balance. Each card sits somewhere along the Stages of Change model to further support practitioners to reflect on where they might currently be experiencing a situation. The call to actions on each card offers activities and strategies for experiential and experimental learning, which we know has a higher chance of embedding change into people’s lives. Language is simple and clear, and each card is beautifully coloured to further symbolise humanity and change being dynamic and moving. We are not static, nor stuck or fixed. Connection Cards are ideal for health and helping professionals - individual workers, teams, leaders and supervisors.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Connection Cards are ideal for health and helping professionals - individual workers, teams, leaders and supervisors. They can be used in conjunction with existing supervision, to complement team meetings, or to take a self-paced critical reflective year of change, for those who don’t have access to support or supervision or who are more invested in taking charge of their growth and change making. We have found the cards to be useful for any worker in the health and helping profession, however they will get even greater use for those who have some familiarity with reflective practices. The invitation is to use a card as a prompt and guide for each week of the year, however it really depends on the capacity and lifestyle of the person to commit to this. People can still make good use of the cards and gain benefit even from sporadic use and to keep them accessible nearby to a work station.
HOW DO I USE IT?
In a supervision or meeting setting, the Connection Cards can be used to explore which particular activities, situations or interactions present challenges for workers, raise their own triggers, biases or unconscious drivers, and invite further self learning, in order to provider better quality work and client outcomes. The cards also offer support suggestions to try out based on the questions, and help to keep the focus of the reflection on the practitioner themselves. This is key. This concept relates to the Use of Self in practice in the health and helping industries. Connection Cards can improve communication, and help build self-understanding and self-awareness. They are ideal for helping leaders and supervisors to understand the lived experience of their staff, team or supervisees, and lead to many ‘aha!’ moments and changes in service delivery dynamics, leading to less overwhelm, overextending and burnout. Connection Cards can also help professionals to communicate with colleagues and management about what types of support they may need most, and are a great tool to take along to individual learning plan meetings.
For workplaces, teams or groups, the cards can be used to elevate many practitioners at once at a whole of workplace level, while also providing valuable insights into individual workers, their challenges, and support needs. When used effectively (in conjunction with a solid understanding of a person’s characteristics and challenges) Connection Cards can help to reduce workplace conflict, presenteeism, overwhelm, burnout and turnover. They also provide amazing conversation and reflection points for staff development days, enhancing shared understanding and consistency of what is needed to continue practicing in these roles and environments.
