Kate Rumney.

She/Her. Social Worker. Counsellor. EFT Therapist.

Authentic. Grounded. Gentle.

BOOK (in person or online)

Kate is an authentic and grounded practitioner, who brings her genuine self to the counselling space. She identifies as a cis-gender, heterosexual woman who is committed to safe, inclusive and affirming practice for everyone who belongs to the LGBTIQA+ community.

After working as a Social Worker after gaining her Masters of Social Work at the University of Tasmania, Kate discovered Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)/ aka Tapping. EFT is an evidence based, trauma-informed somatic therapy which combines the brain and body. EFT encourages people to embrace all parts of them, all of their emotions and their own “truth”. It doesn’t involve any positive reframing from the therapist. Instead EFT works somatically to regulate your nervous system, and allow calmness and groundedness to emerge. This often allows space for your own new thoughts or cognitive shifts to arise.

EFT works by combining gentle and trauma-informed aspects of exposure therapy, alongside acupressure points that have been rigorously studied, and found to be at least as effective as other therapeutic approaches such as CBT and EMDR (and generally on a faster timeline). Unlike traditional talk-therapy, EFT combines the mind and body to release stress, tension and trauma. It has been studied extensively and found to be effective in the treatment of trauma (including PTSD and CPTSD), anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and much more.

Kate incorporates EFT with narrative therapy, mindfulness, parts work and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT). Alongside her non-pathologising Social Work perspective and identity as an intersectional feminist, this creates a therapeutic environment that is client lead, transformative, creative, flexible and non-judgemental.

Kate has extensive experience in case management and counselling support for people who have or are experiencing family violence. Kate has worked both in organisations and sectors that are not designed to provide a specialist family violence response, and organisations who are specialists in the family violence space. Kate’s experience includes family preservation and challenges with child removal, legal system interactions for victims of family and sexual violence, disability support and counselling. Kate has worked supporting both the general Tasmanian population, and for an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation. Kate is passionate about acknowledging, naming and resisting the ongoing impacts of colonisation.

Kate supports you to reduce the emotional impact of events happening now, invites you to process the impact and trauma of events that have happened in the past. Kate’s work supports the release of limiting beliefs that stop you from feeling at home within yourself. After a session with Kate you might feel tired, relaxed, peaceful, lighter or even excited. You will also leave feeling resourced with a new tool you can use on yourself to improve your wellbeing in everyday life outside of therapy sessions.

Outside of the therapy room, Kate is an enthusiastic homebody. You will find Kate at her home in the Huon Valley, Southern Tasmania, as often as she can be, spending time with her animals, in her garden, cooking, reading and crafting. You will also often see Kate with a blanket, hot water bottle and cup of tea in hand.

Kate specialises in, and people (of all ages) who usually seek Kate out are:

  • Are wanting to work through the emotional burdens they carry today from earlier times in their lives

  • Have tried talk-therapy before, and are wanting to give something different a try.

Even if you are skeptical about the benefits of EFT!

  • Want to improve and explore their inner worlds so they can ‘come home to themselves’ more deeply and authentically

  • People at transitions in their lives - puberty, parenthood, perimenopause, gender-affirmation, grief, disability and more.

  • Have experienced gender-based violence, including family and sexual violence at any time in their lives - past or present.

  • Have experienced oppression within the legal system (including police response, criminal law and family law)

  • Are exploring their sense of identity; particularly when they are increasing their questioning of racist, homophobic, transphobic, patriarchal, colonial and ableist structures in society.
